Humans do not have only five senses; neuroscientists recognize at least nine distinct senses, including proprioception (body position), vestibular sense (balance), interoception (internal body state), nociception (pain), and thermoception (temperature), each served by dedicated receptors and neural pathways.

What we found

You were taught you have five senses, but neuroscientists have identified at least nine, each with its own dedicated receptors and neural pathways — and Aristotle has been misleading us for over 2,000 years. Proprioception, balance, pain, temperature, and interoception are all fully distinct senses your body runs every second. You were taught you have five senses — but that's completely wrong. Neuroscientists today recognize at least nine distinct human senses. Beyond sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, your body runs proprioception — the sense of where your limbs are without looking. You also have a vestibular sense for balance, deep inside your inner ear. Nociception tells you when tissue is being damaged — that's separate from ordinary touch. Thermoception detects temperature changes across your skin. And interoception tracks your internal state — your heartbeat, hunger, and breathing. Each one has its own dedicated receptors and neural pathways. So the 'five senses' idea? It dates back to Aristotle, and it was never the full picture. Follow for a fact every day.
